RLE – Refractive Lens Exchange

Advanced Lens Technology. Personalized for You.

For many adults, the freedom to see clearly without depending on glasses is closer than they realize. Refractive Lens Exchange offers a lasting alternative to a life built around eyewear, and at Innovative Ophthalmology, Dr. Bowers and Dr. Harpole specialize in making that freedom a reality, combining advanced lens technology with care tailored to your eyes and your goals.

What Is Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a procedure that reduces or eliminates your dependence on glasses by replacing your eye’s natural lens with an advanced artificial lens. In a single procedure, RLE can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. It is often the preferred choice for adults over 40 who want freedom from glasses at every distance, especially those who are not ideal candidates for LASIK. Presbyopia is an age related condition that gradually reduces your eye’s ability to focus up close. It is why so many adults over 40 come to rely on reading glasses or bifocals for tasks like reading, sewing, and using a phone or computer. Because RLE replaces the natural lens entirely, it corrects presbyopia at its source rather than simply compensating for it. RLE is very similar to modern cataract surgery, with one key difference: it is performed before a cataract develops. This also means you will never develop a cataract in the future.

Our Own Surgery Center

Every step of your care, from consultation through surgery and follow up, happens under one roof at the Innovative Eye Surgery Center.

Award Winning Care

We have been voted Reader’s Choice Best Ophthalmologist eight years in a row, a reflection of the trust our community places in us.

A Locally Owned Practice

As the only locally owned and operated ophthalmologist in the region, we answer to our patients, not to a corporate parent.

A Personalized Approach

Rather than a one-size-fits-all plan, our surgeons take time to understand how you live and work so they can match you with the right lens for your eyes and lifestyle.

What Happens During RLE?

Refractive Lens Exchange is an outpatient procedure, which means you go home the same day. The procedure itself usually takes only about 15 minutes per eye, and most patients are surprised by how quick and gentle the experience feels.

  1. Your surgeon applies numbing eye drops, and a mild sedative is typically offered to help you relax.
  2. Your surgeon makes a small, self-sealing opening in the eye.
  3. Precise technology is used to gently break up and remove the eye’s natural lens.
  4. A clear artificial lens, called an intraocular lens or IOL, is positioned exactly where the natural lens once sat.

The IOL you choose with Dr. Bowers or Dr. Harpole ahead of time determines the range of vision you will enjoy afterward. To protect both your vision and your comfort, the two eyes are usually treated on separate days.

IOL Options at Innovative Ophthalmology

The lens you choose makes a tremendous difference in how you see the world after RLE. There is no single best lens for everyone, so our surgeons help you choose from several categories of premium IOLs based on your prescription, your eye health, your unique measurements, and the activities that fill your day.

Toric IOLs

Toric IOLs, also known as astigmatism-correcting lenses, neutralize the irregular corneal curvature that causes astigmatism and blurs vision at all distances, delivering crisp, focused sight and an important first step toward freedom from glasses.

Extended Depth of Focus IOLs

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) Lenses create a single elongated zone of clear vision, offering a smooth, continuous range that is especially strong for distance and intermediate tasks such as the computer and the dashboard, often with fewer nighttime side effects.

Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal Lenses build multiple focusing zones into the lens so the eye can see clearly at more than one distance, an excellent choice for patients whose top priority is reducing their dependence on reading glasses.

Trifocal IOLs

Trifocal Lenses provide three distinct points of focus for near, intermediate, and distance vision, making them one of the most complete options for sharp sight across nearly every part of the day.

What Is the Recovery Like After RLE?

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how smooth recovery from Refractive Lens Exchange tends to be. Clearer vision often arrives within the first day or two, and it continues to sharpen over the following weeks as your eyes adjust to the new lens.

To support healing, your surgeon will send you home with prescription eye drops that protect against infection, along with a few easy guidelines for the first week. Steering clear of eye rubbing, heavy lifting, and swimming gives your eyes the calm they need to settle. Even so, most people are back to their everyday routines within just a few days.

From there, a series of follow up visits lets us track your progress and make sure your vision is settling exactly as it should.

Am I a Candidate for RLE?

Refractive Lens Exchange is an especially good fit for adults over the age of 40 who are beginning to depend on readers or bifocals and who want lasting freedom from glasses at all distances. You may be an excellent candidate if you:

  • Are tired of relying on glasses or contacts for everyday activities
  • Are noticing presbyopia and find yourself reaching for reading glasses
  • Are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism and want it corrected
  • May not be an ideal LASIK candidate because of your age or prescription
  • Want to address vision now and avoid developing cataracts later in life

The only way to know whether RLE is right for you is a thorough evaluation.

During your consultation, Dr. Bowers or Dr. Harpole will measure your eyes, review your overall eye health, and talk with you about your daily activities and your goals before recommending the option that fits you best.
